It’s clear that sheltering at home in some form is going to be a way of life for quite a while. Though restrictions may ease over the coming months, experts believe, according to The Atlantic, that “gently easing back on social distancing would be safer, Morris argues, than snapping back to business as usual…”
Given that we’re likely to be at home at least through May, if not longer, I’ve decided to keep teaching Prompted, a generative online writing workshop for writers of all genres and levels.
The thought of sheltering at home another month, much less the rest of the summer, is daunting. Some days I wake up determined and productive. Others, I can barely get myself to read a book, much less complete my lengthy to-do list.
I’ve discovered, however, that when I make an effort to reach out to other writers–to talk shop, to set goals, to do a silent Zoom writing session–I feel not just motivated but also more centered and peaceful.
I especially felt that way after teaching my first session of the April/May Prompted workshop. A warmth and generosity suffused the session as people talked about their work and the struggle to create during this pandemic. There was also a sense of wonderment each time students read aloud their responses to a prompt.
Usually after teaching, I’m happy yet drained; the most I can do is watch bad TV and go to bed. That night, I went upstairs and wrote. Hearing such evocative work produced on the spot by these talented writers inspired me.
Because I’m finding it helpful for both me and workshop participants to work together to stay positive and creative during this difficult time, I’ve decided to teach Prompted on an ongoing basis.
Designed for writers of all levels and genres, the workshop helps participants generate new writing in a relaxed, collaborative online environment. We’ll talk about basic writing craft principles, focusing on how to create richly imagined characters and challenge them with conflicts that threaten their hidden, most deeply held desires.
Participants will put these concepts to use by writing in response to prompts aimed at provoking characters into action. Participants will also be able to share their work aloud for feedback from the class on the most evocative, exciting aspects of their writing. The goal is to generate pieces to use as inspiration for new or existing work.
Each Prompted Workshop will consist of four individual sessions. Sessions will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 pm – 8 pm PST via Zoom. Each session is limited to 8 students. You may enroll in all four or just a few sessions per workshop, whichever you prefer.
The upcoming May/June Prompted Workshop will meet on the following dates:
As I noted above, you may enroll in one or more sessions, depending on availability. Each individual session is $30. Enroll in all 4 sessions for $100.
Enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis.
For additional enrollment information, go to my Coaching & Classes page, or, if you’re ready, click below to enroll in the current session.
I hope to see you soon!
