Fiction, Screenwriting, Nonfiction, Poetry, Oral Storytelling - We've Got It All!

This spring, I’m teaching another round of Introduction to Creative Writing, a six-week course at UCLA Extension Writers’ Program that starts on Monday, April 16th.

“Introduction to Creative Writing” is a survey class designed for students just getting started on the path to becoming writers.  Here’s the course description:

Students work in small breakout sessions with experienced writers and teachers, then attend a lecture by various guest speakers with expertise in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or screenwriting. Short assignments are workshopped in the weekly breakouts. The goal of the course is to expose new writers to a variety of types of writing while getting their creative juices flowing. At the end of the quarter, students will feel more confident about their skills and will be prepared for further study of writing.

So if you’re interested in learning about different genres of writing, this class is for you.

Guest speakers include:

• Steven Wolfson, an award-winning playwright and recipient of two UCLA Extension Outstanding Instructor Awards in Creative Writing and Screenwriting
• Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, an acclaimed poet who has taught courses on social justice poetry, LA literary communities, and literary submission strategies throughout Los Angeles
• Ron Darian, an author and writer/producer whose fiction has appeared in numerous journals and whose TV credits include “Frasier” and “Mad About You”
• Mathew Rodriguez, a staff writer at INTO, a LGBTQ digital magazine, and an essayist whose work has appeared in Slate, the Village Voice, and Mic
• Lia Langworthy, a TV writer and essayist who has written for FX, Showtime, ABC and TvOne and whose credits include “Soul Food,” “The Shield,” “General Hospital,” and “Media”
• April Wayland, an award-winning author of seven picture books and recipient of a UCLA Extension Outstanding Instructor Award in Creative Writing
